Humans of Clarkston – Maria González

Mosaic Health Center

Updated: Jan 6

In the Clarkston area, over 15,000 people have no health insurance.  Without access to ongoing care, our community is less healthy, and our health care costs are much higher.  Access to primary care doesn’t only help people in need, but it also saves us all money – it is the right thing to do, and the smart thing to do.  At MHC, we are working to provide access to care for individuals in need.  To continue to meet the need to serve the 15,000+ without access to care, MHC provides access to our high-quality providers, free medications, on-site labs, health education and navigation services, and referrals for critically needed preventive care – all for under $600 per year.  We rely on the generosity of our supporters to provide this care.

Each of these 15,000 people has a story to tell.  This series shares some of those stories to see the human face behind the numbers.

What is your name?  Maria González (name has been changed for the purpose of this story to keep the patient anonymous)

What is your story?  I’m from El Salvador in Central America.  There was a civil war, and my family was scared about it, so we moved to California.  Then I moved to Stone Mountain when I was older, and since then have been here.

How did you find out about MHC?   I was very sick and had no insurance, and someone told me about the clinic here in Clarkston helping people with no insurance.  My blood pressure was too high when I came, and they sent me to the hospital because they couldn’t keep me here and check me here.  I almost had a heart attack.  Since then, I’ve been coming here and they have helped me be in control with my hypertension and high blood pressure.  I am glad to be here because they helped me a lot with checkups and prescriptions.  I now help with my mom and live with my sister, and I still come here even though it is far.

What has MHC meant to you?  God sent me here.  They helped me and they provided.  They saved me.

The doctor told me to lose weight because my cholesterol is too high.  She told me to walk, breathe, and stress less in nature.  I enjoy walking now.  I breathe along the creek in Sandy Springs.

The doctor always helped me with my appointment.  If I missed it, they would call me and tell me I needed to be here.  They always checked my cholesterol, and helped me to bring it down.  I’m very happy with the people here.

God blessed me to come here with my appointment with my heart.  I trust everyone here to help me.  I almost had a heart attack when I came in, and they saved me.  A lot of people need this clinic, not only me.  It’s a blessing from God to have this clinic here.  And people who support this clinic are very good.  I always say, if I get money, I have to support this clinic.
